A Statement of Rationale and Intention for Canada Day
Consistent with the Truth and Reconciliation Recommendations and in particular Recommendations that support and encourage us to adopt and advance the (#43) full implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as the framework for reconciliation. And with an aim to walk forward together in the spirit of reconciliation.
We acknowledge:
- We all have a role in reconciliation
- We are all Treaty People
- That every person in Canada must know the truth about Canada’s history and the impact of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples including the role and impact of aspects such as: Doctrine of Discovery; Residential School System; and failure to honour Treaties to name but a few.
- The disproportionate harm and suffering brought about to and for Indigenous Peoples in Canada, many of which continue today and needs reform.
Inspired by the call to (#79.ii) revise the policies, criteria, and practices of the National Program of Historical Commemoration to integrate Indigenous history, heritage values, and memory practices into Canada’s national heritage and history.
Encouraged by the call to (#94) faithfully bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and faithfully observe the laws of Canada including Treaties with Indigenous Peoples and fulfill our duties as a Canadian citizen.
This respectful honouring is being designed and developed to include:
- Active involvement of Elders and Knowledge Keepers
- Educational elements surrounding our acknowledgements noted
- Indigenous Cultural Practices (Blessing; Story Telling; Dance and Song)
- Celebration of Achievements of Canadians
- Cultural presentations of song, dance, art and history
- Bringing our community together with an aim to advancing understanding, acceptance and to walk forward together in a spirit of reconciliation
- Traditional Fireworks Show
- Festivities which will occur throughout the day on July 1st.
Getting Here & Getting Around
Forget parking and traffic – leave the car at home. Attendees can take regular transit service from all over the city and we encourage you to make these connection to the Saskatoon Transit routes with your bike, or an Uber, or taxi as you head downtown for Canada Day. It’s easier than ever when you use Transit, Saskatoon Transit’s recommended trip planning app. Transit suggests trips that easily combine public transit with options like Uber or Riide, and lets you pay your Saskatoon Transit fare with just a few taps. Regular service runs until 9:15 PM and regular fares apply ($3.00 per trip for adults and $2.25 for children), transfers, passes and electronic tickets are also accepted.
Saskatoon Transit will have FREE bus service available following the fireworks from 3rd Avenue northbound / north of 19th Street (west of Broadway Bridge) and Broadway Avenue southbound / south of 12th Street (east of Broadway Bridge) to take passengers to six central spots, Confederation Mall terminal, Centre Mall terminal, Market Mall terminal, Lawson Heights terminal and Cope terminus and Nelson / Lowe Road. Buses will stop when requested along the routes noted in the map below. From there you are encouraged to book a ride hail as part of a multi-modal trip.
Access Transit: All the pickups and drop-offs for the event will be at the temporary stop on 2nd Ave just north of the Alt Hotel.

We are offering FREE use of the bike valet on Sunday for everyone to use! It will be located in the parking lot of the Meewasin Valley Authority building on Spadina and 3rd. A big thank you to Erin for coordinating this excellent service! Ride your bike, save some gas, and rest easy knowing it will be safe all day with the Saskatoon Cycles Bike Valet!
